History

Understanding People, Places, and Ourselves.   We believe that a solid foundation in history contributes to the moral understanding of students and is essential to the formation of good citizenship.  Carden Academy’s extensive history curriculum begins in Third Grade and employs an instructional methodology that focuses on analysis, dictation, map work, reference work, outlining, and research/presentation of oral reports.  Emphasis on gaining a better understanding of people and cultures around the world through time is imbedded in the instruction.  

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade.  Third Grade students are introduced to the exciting world of Ancient Civilizations: Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and Greece.  Fourth Grade students shift to lessons on Early North American Explorers, California History, and Native Americans.  Fourth Grade students also travel to Sacramento as part of their state government studies.  Fifth Grade students study American History from the American Revolution to President Lincoln.  Students integrate their new knowledge through a variety of traditional and active learning strategies, such as song, art, music, poems, field trips, creative writing, and guest lecturer presentations.

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade.  This in-depth history program prepares students for honors and advanced placement classes in high school and includes field trips to Arizona and Washington, D.C.  Sixth Grade students delve deeper into the Ancient Civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire.  Seventh Grade students study other Great Civilizations and Epochs, including the Byzantine Empire, China, Japan, Maya, Aztec, Inca, Medieval, Renaissance, and the Protestant Reformation.  Eighth Grade students study U.S. History from the Civil War to the present.

Fourth Graders study the thirteen major rivers of the world and are introduced to the countries through which they flow by guest lecturers.  Sixth through Eighth Grade students study all continents and countries with an emphasis on written outlines, oral reports and the creation of presentation boards.
